When does Missouri require an SR-22?
The Missouri Department of Revenue typically requires an SR-22 after:
- DWI conviction (Driving While Intoxicated)
- Accident while uninsured - even if you weren't at fault, Missouri requires proof of future financial responsibility
- Accumulating 8 or more points on your driving record
- License suspension for any reason involving financial responsibility
- Failure to pay a damage judgment from an auto accident
- Reinstatement after a revocation
Your court order or the notice from the Missouri DOR will state specifically whether SR-22 is required and the start date. You can review the state's own requirements on the official Missouri DOR insurance page.
How long do I need SR-22 in Missouri?
The required filing period is set by your court or the Missouri DOR and will be stated in your paperwork. The length varies depending on the offense and whether there are prior violations.
Whatever the period, coverage must be continuous. If your policy lapses - even for a day - Missouri will be notified by your insurer, your license can be re-suspended, and you may be required to start the filing period over. Keep your policy active and make sure renewal payments are made on time.
How much does SR-22 insurance cost in Missouri?
Two costs:
- Filing fee: most SR-22 policies include a filing fee when we transmit the SR-22 to the Missouri DOR. People sometimes mistake this fee for the full cost of SR-22 insurance - it isn't.
- Policy premium: the actual auto insurance cost, which depends on your driving record, age, vehicle, ZIP code, and which carrier we place you with.
Missouri drivers with a single DWI typically see premiums 30-60% higher than standard rates. Drivers with multiple violations or recent serious offenses can see larger increases - but specialty carriers (the ones we work with) are far more competitive than mainstream insurers in these situations. We always shop at least three carriers before quoting you.
Non-owner SR-22 in Missouri
If you don't own a vehicle but need to reinstate your Missouri license, you can buy a non-owner SR-22 policy. It satisfies the state requirement and covers you when driving cars you don't own. Non-owner policies typically cost 30-50% less than owner policies in Missouri because there's no specific vehicle to insure for physical damage.
Missouri SR-22 + ignition interlock
Many Missouri DWI cases also require an ignition interlock device (IID). The two requirements often run on parallel timelines. Through our sister company Missouri Ignition Interlock, we can coordinate IID installation when you set up your SR-22 through Lucent. One phone call handles both court requirements.
Missouri interlock service centers:
- Independence, MO - 1600 South Noland Rd, Suite 212 B, Independence, MO 64055
- Maryland Heights, MO - 11848 Dorsett Rd. Office B, Maryland Heights, MO 63043
