An SR-22 (sometimes referred to as a certificate of insurance or a financial responsibility filing) is a vehicle liability insurance document required by most state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices for "high-risk" insurance policies.
Contrary to common belief, the SR22 is not a special “type” of insurance product, rather it is traditional auto insurance, with the only difference being proof of the insurance is provided to the state verifying the insured has met the insurance requirements for their particular state. This proof of insurance is only good as long as the insurance is maintained. If coverage should lapse, the state will be notified and invalidate your license in most cases.
Liability coverage pays others when your at fault in an accident. Liability coverage consists of two components bodily injury and property damage. BI pays for injury and death to others while property damage covers the property of others.
Wisconsin Required Minimum Liability Coverages
Alabama and Missouri Required Minimum Liability Coverages
Wisconsin and Missouri Required Uninsured Motorist Coverages
You can see how state minimums can easily be inadequate simply in property damage alone should your actions cause the total destruction of an $80,000 Escalade. The state required limits of $10,000 in WI would cover very little of the damage. That said every vehicle is not an Escalade, and your budget may force you into accepting state minimum coverage.
We will quote liability coverage for both the state minimums as well as more substantial coverage so you can weigh your options and compare premiums. If your budget forces you to accept the state minimums we can always revisit your policy down the line and increase your coverage, should your financial situation improve.
Liability coverage outlined above covers other people and their property, and is required by law. The following optional coverages apply to you in the event of bodily injury or property losses.
Underinsured motorist coverage is purchased to cover you and the people in your car up to the amount of coverage you purchase if the at-fault party's bodily injury liability insurance limits are lower than your UIM coverage limits.Essentially, you are buying this insurance to pay for your own injuries if the opposing drivers has insufficient insurance to cover they’re at fault liability in the accident.
If requested, minimum coverage limits of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident are required.
Also known as “other than collision,” comprehensive does just that, covering nearly anything else that could cause damage or loss, including theft, fire, flood, vandalism, damage from an animal hitting your car etc.
MedPay Protects you and your passengers regardless of who caused the accident, covering injuries. The limit is usually fairly low and intended to cover immediate medical and funeral expenses as a result of an accident or to supplement other insurances. Keep in mind your health insurance may cover auto accidents without a deductible making this insurance unnecessary.
Roadside assistance to cover labor and towing to get your car to a shop and rental vehicles are covered separately with these two optional insurance products. Keep in mind you may already have coverage for these types of things through AAA memberships or similar programs.
